Some Trachs have it…some Trachs don't… What is a Fenestrated Tracheostomy Tube?

A fenestrated tracheotomy tube has an opening in the curvature of the posterior wall of the outer cannula.

Fenestration allows for speech with cuff deflation, removal of the inner cannula, and occlusion of the outer cannula because air is permitted to flow through the upper airway and tracheostomy opening.
